It was a great turn-out for our 55th Anniversary, with warm feelings all around.   Long-missed faces, like William Stricklin and Chad Marlow…and our honorees Norman Siegel, Friends In Deed and Gale Brewer were clearly wowed by the celebration.

Thanks to all who attended and who donated.  Some deserve special recognition for making this happen.  Our Gala Committee of Katharine Wolpe, Ellen Peterson-Lewis, Tom Conner and Sharon Woolums put in the long hours of planning, strategy and arranging. Extra help was provided by Deley Gazinelli, who set up the award placques. Eli Hausknecht monitored the ticket purchases and arranged the event check-in and revenue. Eli, this could not have happened without you.

Celia Wu also worked on the tickets and brought our prominently displayed VID banner to the event, and helped me set up Paypal on the VID website. Reinforcements for the phone tree included Nadine Hoffmann, Tony Hoffman, Keen Berger, Brad Hoylman, Frieda Bradlow, and Kathy Jacobson. And our top table team, taking tickets, was attended by Peter Crosta, Georgina Christ, Tim McNerney and Teresa Hommel.  Sharon handed out drink tix and Katharine Wolpe directed traffic. Tony Hoffman served as photographer. Our well-placed and elegantly presented Villager ad was designed by Yayoi Tsuchitani.

I want to say a special word about our outstanding District Leaders, Keen Berger and Brad Hoylman. Somehow during my opening remarks I lost a card and thus skipped over their leadership over the past year on the St Vincent’s matter and the park and the new middle school at 75 Morton, the opposition to NYU2031, and so many other issues. Brad and Keen exemplify the heart and soul of VID. Thank you both for turning our ideals and goals into realities.

It was honoring Annette Zaner and Yvonne Sherwell, who have been two of the pillars of VID that was the sweetest verse of this song. This was our moment to embrace you. Annette, Yvonne, it is far too little recognition for your many years of fierce and longstanding dedication to VID, but I know that it lifted us — all of us — and so I hope it lifted you as well.

Happy 55th Gala, VID.

New Year’s, Martin Luther King Day,  Valentines Day, Presidents Day and we are finally able to say thank you – with pictures – from The December Holiday Pot-Luck Party (double click on the first image to get to the slideshow)…

It was a jolly affair.  As you can see by the pictures, this was not your usual stuffy political event!  Frieda Bradlow provided the wonderful space. and food and drink came by the armfuls by our friends and members.  The bake-off between Keen’s Chocolate Raisin Oatmeal cookies and Nadine’s No-Calorie Chocolate cupcakes ended in a tie.  The judges had fun!  Georgina’s hand-made hats sold briskly and she donated the profits to VID.  She will make a hat specifically for you if you can catch her at a meeting!

Elected officials attending included Speaker Christine Quinn, East Sidecouncilmember Jessica Lappin, and Manhattan County Leader, Keith Wright.  Silvia Hoylman-Sigal made an appearance, with Dad Brad, provoking lots of goo-goos and ga-gas.   A juggernaut of judges and judicial hopefuls showed up on one of their many stops that day.  But… nothing before or after our shindig could compare with our special guest, belly dancer and fire-eater.  Lots of goo-goos there also.  Stop drooling!!!  Thanks to Deley and his partners at Le Souk for the addition.  Quite a party.

VID President Jonathan Geballe

VID President Jonathan Geballe

I would like to thank our membership for electing me to serve out the remainder of this term as president. I am honored to have been selected and to have the opportunity to serve VID and its members. I am thrilled that you have chosen Eli Hausknecht to be Vice President and to serve along with our two outstanding VPs, Lorna Gottesman and Tim McNerney, our superb Treasurer and Secretary, Kathy Jacobson and Celia Wu respectively, our terrific Corresponding Secretary, Annette Zaner, the dedicated Yvonne Sherwell of our Tenants Clinic, and all who devote time on our Executive Board.

We continue to assert our progressive ideals, to protect and defend our civil rights, to strive for fair and full economic opportunity, education, healthcare for all. We seek a community where the most needy and vulnerable – the elderly, the young, the disabled, the out-of-work — are cared for and not forgotten. Some of our goals are far reaching, say, for a more peaceful world or habitable environment. Some are smaller in scale but no less valued, such as the day-to-day issues presented by tenants to our Tenants Clinic.

Having reiterated those principles, we must now turn to the job we have immediately ahead of us: rebuffing the rightward swing of the Teabaggers and their extreme ideological purification campaign to eliminate Democrats, progressives and even moderate Republicans. This is no time to be complacent because we assume that Manhattan is safely Democratic. What we do here will have statewide and national ramifications, and it is our job to organize a heavy downstate Democratic majority to offset the conservative vote elsewhere. VID must turn its energy to getting out the Democratic vote November 2nd: canvassing, sending good neighbor letters, campaigning and getting voters to the polls on Election Day. Please join with me in this effort.

Thank you.

Jonathan Geballe
