VID Celebrates its 58th year with an Awards Gala

A highlight in the spring season of NYC politics, VID’s 58th Annual fête  promises no less in 2015.  The Spring Forward Awards Gala will take place on Thursday, April 30th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Tio Pepe Restaurant, at 168 West 4th St.

Honors will go to Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu for bringing progressive values to the ballot and challenging the Democratic status quo.  Receiving honors for the fight for a living wage for all workers will be Shantel Walker, on behalf of Fast Food Forward.

Petitioning Party Come join Deborah, Brad and the rest of the VID team for our petitioning party breakfast.  We’ll talk politics,  causes and distribute petitions.  After breakfast we will disburse throughout the Village and gather signatures for VID’s endorsed candidates.

Saturday, May 31st 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon VID Headquarters, 26 Perry Street

If you cannot join us for our petitioning party breakfast on May 31st,  the VID will be open every Monday and Thursday evening from 6:00-7:30 PM and Saturdays from 11:00-1:00 through July 3rd.  July 7th will be the last day to hand in petitions (the club will be open from 6:00-7:30 PM).

Brad Hoylman Candidate for NYS Senate 29th District

Brad Hoylman endorsed for State Senate. VID held its endorsement meeting for the state Senate, hearing from three candidates: Tanika Inlaw (former president of Yonkers NAACP) and Thomas Greco (Jim Owles and McManus Democratic clubs) both spoke and took questions, as did VID’s own Brad Hoylman (District Leader and Community Board 2 Chairperson). The ballot count showed a resounding endorsement by VID for Brad Hoylman to fill the retiring Tom Duane’s Senate seat. Welcome aboard, Brad, and congratulations.

Now we have more motivation to fill our petitions with signatures: VID will hopefully have both an Assemblymember (Deborah Glick) and a Senator (Brad Hoylman) calling VID their “home club.” How many clubs can claim that honor?

June Meeting’s Featured Speaker. Our featured speaker was Shirley Gray from the Social Services Employees Union Local 371, accompanied by Doris Hernandez Murphy and John M. Land. The subject was Gov Cuomo’s proposal to put care of homebound seniors in the hands of HMO style healthcare providers under a program called Managed Care, essentially moving people from home care to nursing home facilities — and what would ensue if the often doctor-prescribed and desired home care is curbed.

  6. Endorsement for State Senate-29th State Senate District.

Refreshments will be provided.
