Petitioning Party Come join Deborah, Brad and the rest of the VID team for our petitioning party breakfast.  We’ll talk politics,  causes and distribute petitions.  After breakfast we will disburse throughout the Village and gather signatures for VID’s endorsed candidates.

If you cannot join us for our petitioning party breakfast on May 31st,  the VID will be open every Monday and Thursday evening from 6:00-7:30 PM and Saturdays from 11:00-1:00 through July 3rd.  July 7th will be the last day to hand in petitions (the club will be open from 6:00-7:30 PM).

Maloney at VID

John Bredin, Congresswoman Maloney and Sharon Woolums at April 12th Forum

Village Independent Democrats (VID) is proud to announce that Rep Carolyn Maloney (14th District, NY, representing part of Manhattan and Queens) will be speaking and taking questions at our upcoming April 12 General Membership Meeting.

 
 
The Congresswoman will address a number of topics, including the recent controversial House panel on contraception and her headline-grabbing opening query, upon surveying the male-only presenters: “Where are the women?” Attendance is free and the public is welcome to attend and ask questions.
 
 
Location: St John’s Lutheran Church, 82 Christopher St (just off 7th Ave)
Date: Thursday, April 12, 2012
The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. for some membership items and the Congresswoman will be speaking at 8:15 p.m.
Attendance is free and open to the public.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, VID endorsed

The Village Independent Democrats held its Candidate Forum and Endorsement Meeting on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Greenwich House. The Forum was held in conjunction with Downtown Independent Democrats and was co-chaired by DID President Jeanne Wilcke and VID President Jonathan Geballe. There was an impressive turnout of candidates, including candidates for Civil Court and Surrogate’s Court.

We were pleased to hear from Congressman Jerry Nadler, State Senator Tom Duane and Assemblymember Deborah Glick, among many others. Sean Gavin appeared for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and we also heard from Scott Noren, M.D., who is running for NY State Senator as an Independent Democrat, but who is not a candidate in the primary.

Because we shared the forum with DID certain candidates outside our district also appeared or were represented: Councilmember Rosie Mendez appeared to speak on behalf of Congressmember Nydia Velazquez, Congressmember Carolyn Maloney was represented, State Senator Daniel Squadron was represented, and State Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh appeared, along with Rachel Lavine and Arthur Schwartz from the NY Democratic State Committee.

After the forum, VID endorsed the following – please note the three primary election dates for these candidates:

President: Barack Obama  – The Presidential Primary Election is on April 24,2012; the last day to register for this primary is March 30,2012

DemocratsVID will be holding its 2012 Candidate Endorsement Forum and Vote on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Location is Greenwich House, 27 Barrow Street (just east of 7th Avenue), 5th Floor (called the “Yellow Room”).* The forum will also be attended by the Downtown Independent Democrats.

Candidates will speak between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. VID’s endorsement discussion and vote will take place the same night and location at 9:00 p.m.

We are inviting candidates (or their representatives) seeking the Democratic Party ballot line for the following offices:

President and Vice President of the United States
U.S. Senator
U.S. Representative (8th District)
U.S. Representative (14th District)
NYS Senate (25th Senate District)
NYS Senate (29th Senate District)

*This meeting will replace our General Membership Meeting (originally scheduled for March 8).
